FEATURED COLUMN:
MidLife Crisis By Pastor David A. Baillie
You know the stereotpe don't you? Man hits mid-life, somewhere between 40 and 50 and goes through a little crisis. To help deal with the crisis he goes out and gets a red car that is different from everyone elses and brings all kinds of attention to himself. So, I guess I need to confess. I'm in my mid- 40's now, and a few weeks ago I had to go out and get a red car that none of the people I know can really think about having. Yep, that's right, I am now the proud owner of a burgundy 1991 Dodge Dynasty! Let me tell you, it attracts attention everywhere I go and I enjoy it. The car was my grandmother's. The mileage on it is about 42,000 which isn't bad for a 20-year old car. It was exactly what you think a grandma car would be. She drove it to church, to the grocery store, and to the home to see the "old people" each week (most of whom were 10 to 20 years younger than her). She bought it new and took it in once a year for a complete going over. We love this car. My children call it Mildred, which was my grandmothers name. I realized as I was driving that car last night that when she bought it all those years ago I was in my mid-twenties. I was one of the youngest Division I volleyball coaches in the country (fortunately the one time grandma came to watch us play we put a whoopin' on Georgia Tech). Living in Madagascar had not even crossed my mind then, and my wife and my children weren't even a glimmer in my eye. How quickly those years have flown by. Sometimes it went so quickly I never slowed down to enjoy the journey, and now here I am 20 years later and I have this car that was kept well and cared for and passed down to me as a legacy. More than that however, I have a legacy of love, of giving, of sacrifice, of selfless servanthood that was passed down on both sides of my family. I am grateful for what has been given to me, and I can only pray that in the years that come my children will be keenly aware of the love, the lives, and the passions of those who have gone before. May we be good caretakers of things that we pass on to those who will follow us, and not just those material things, but the things that truly matter. May our children find in us lessons for life, so that 20 years from now they may look back and realize that in their hearts they hold on to something that is priceless.
